2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

The sensational 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford comes from clone 4 and the old Georges III Vineyard now owned by Beckstoffer. This is a floral, earthy wine with a dense purple color and a big, sweet, complex nose that follows through on the palate with loads of kirsch liqueur, black currants, dusty soil undertones, some cedar wood and spicy oak. Opaque purple, full-bodied, and generously endowed, it can be drunk over the next 15-20 years.

Patel's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford) emerges from one of the top sites in the appellation. Cedar, tobacco, mint, red cherry, chocolate and menthol nuances are vivid in the glass. Medium in body and yet super resonant, the Rutherford Cabernet is another stellar wine in this range. The 2016 is already quite pliant and supple. Accordingly, it will drink well with minimal cellaring.

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coombsville) is fabulous. A rich, powerful wine, the 2015 exudes richness and volume. Super-ripe black cherry, torrefaction, new French oak, chocolate, smoke, licorice, tobacco and incense add to the wine's virile, imposing personality. Here, too, the wine's overall balance is simply impeccable. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2015 for at least a few years. This is an especially big style for Coombsville, but it works.

2018 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley

2018 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley

May 28, 2020 Virtual Tasting

An elegant wine with aromatics of sweet white flowers, this expression of Sauvignon Blanc is powerful, and anything but typical. Barrel fermentation and aging lends a touch of sweetness, textured mouthfeel and a dry finish, while weaving an intricate and seductive blend of herbs, ripe white peach, and a touch of pineapple. Aging for 14 months in 100% French Oak makes this Sauvignon Blanc rich and pleasing to the palate, with a smooth creamy texture balanced with a hint of spice and refreshing acidity. ~ Winemaker Julien Fayard

2017 Napa Valley Red Wine

2017 Napa Valley Red Wine

The 2017 Red Wine is mostly Merlot from Coombsville, with a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon, all picked before the fires. It is also the only red wine Patel bottled in 2017. This spent 18 months in French oak, 60% of which was new. Ripe red cherry and plum fruit give the 2017 plenty of juiciness, with hints of cinnamon, wild flowers, cedar and tobacco that develop in the glass. Given its mid-weight structure, I would prefer to drink the 2017 sooner rather than later, while the fruit remains vinous and fresh.

2015 Napa Valley Malbec

2015 Napa Valley Malbec

A luxurious, silky red that surpasses expectations for this variety. Its mountain home on Stagecoach Vineyard equates to top real estate, borne from dark red dirt, with high clay and iron content. Bright, meaty, blood-iron aromas and black cherry emanate from the glass. Dark chocolate melts into a café latte. A juiciness squeezes through spice and oak, finishing in a wash of black fruit.

2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville

2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coombsville) is superb. Dark, powerful and savory, the 2016 possesses terrific power and pure gravitas to back up the intense dark fruit, savory herb and mineral flavors. Ample and full-bodied the 2016 is not a shy wine, rather it packs a serious punch. A rush of black cherry jam, bittersweet chocolate, new leather, spice and grilled herbs build into the driving, tannic finish.
